Lunch & Learn #2: Creative Uses of Buttons

Whether you wardrobe needs a quick update or you just feel creative, buttons can be a designer detail that announces your sense of style. They are a wonderful way to put your personal stamp on a plain garment or change last year's style into this year's trend.

Here are a few tips for creating with buttons:

  • Use decorative thread to sew on the buttons. Make the stitches using contrasting colors, metallic threads, embroidery floss or pearl cotton.
  • Stack two buttons on top of each other and then sew them on to create a unique layered button accent. Use a larger button on the bottom and a smaller button on the top making sure the holes align for ease of sewing.
  • Add beads to stitches when you are sewing on a button. The beads not only anchor the button but also add a creative flair.
  • Show off a collection of vintage buttons by grouping them on one garment. Sew similar sizes but different colors and shapes for an eclectic look.
  • Cover buttons with vintage fabrics or small pieces of ribbon and trims. If you have an old handkerchief or an embroidered hand towel that is damaged beyond normal use, recycle it into covered buttons for that one of a kind look.
  • Use your button collection on lampshades, pillows, purses, jewelry and even greeting cards. You will be amazed at all the creative places you will find to use them.
