Coat with frayed edgesCreate a Shabby Chic Wardrobe

One of the hottest trends this fall is fringed or frayed edges. This easy and unique detail adorns hems, lapels, collars and seams. We have listed a few tips for adding this fashion forward touch to your latest creations.

  1. Use a loosely woven fabric to form the fringe. One way to determine if your fabric choice will fringe well is to pull a yarn across the grain line. If you can easily remove it without breaking, the fabric will probably be a good choice.
  2. Cut the fabric carefully so the fringed edge will be on as much of the straight of grain as possible.
  3. Measure and mark the depth of the fringe using a disappearing ink marker. Make sure the marks follow the yarn line.
  4. Set your sewing machine for a narrow width zigzag and stitch on the marked line to anchor the fringe.
  5. Use the point of a pin or needle to lift the yarns and pull them away. Stop removing the yarns when you reach the zigzagged line. Use Fray Check® on the seam to reinforce the stitch. (Be sure to use Fray Check on an inconspicuous spot of your fabric to test for the desired results).
  6. For a thicker fringe, cut a fabric strip following the straight of grain at least on inch wider than your desired finished trim. Fringe the strip following the instructions leaving the one-inch base; Sew in place behind the first fringe.
